Title: Teaching neural networks how to speak a language of (quantum) phases of matter
Abstract: Neural networks NNs have recently become powerful tools fordetecting different collective behaviors of quantum systems (so-called quantumphases of matter), but their black-box character limits their ability toprovide additional physical insight into these behaviors. In physics, phasesare traditionally identified through order parameters—symbolic descriptorsbased on spin correlators if talking about spin models—which describe thedominant characteristics of the phase. I will begin the talk with an accessibleintroduction to these physics concepts. I will then present TetrisCNN, aconvolutional architecture with parallel branches of differentkernels, that not only classifies phases of spin systems from rawmeasurements but also reconstructs their order parameters in symbolic form.Demonstrations include recovering known descriptors in the one-dimensionaltransverse-field Ising model and uncovering more complex ones in thetwo-dimensional Ising gauge theory. I will also show preliminary results formeasurements done on real quantum device. This approach opens the way forcombining interpretable ML with quantum simulators, with potential impact onautomated discovery of exotic phases of matter.
